One of the most enjoyable aspects
of JRTCA trials besides competing is the opportunity to watch other
dogs. With a background of showing Irish Sitters in AKC. I spent
more time watching & learning about conformation which emphasizes
the breed standard of the Jack Russell which is based on the
physical attributes of a hunting dog. Terrier or Terror is Latin for
earth. The Jack Russell Terrier is first and foremost a hunting dog.
To simulate this aspect at trials, the JRTCA has an event called
go-to-ground. This event simulates underground earthwork by allowing
a terrier to enter an artificial earth tunnel setting and must bay
at the quarry for 1 minute. I wanted to have terriers that could do it all & that brought me to Karen McCarthy of Sow's Ear in NY. A long time breeder whose dogs competed and won in multiple events such as racing & gtg, then enter conformation and often winning the championship all at the same trial. Her terriers are bred good temperament & hunting ability. We were looking for a little girl, Sow's Ear Sugar N Spice was born on on Christmas day right before the pies went in the oven. She is both sweet & spicy! Spice did well in racing & gtg her puppy year and to our delight has stayed small at only 11.75". For Spice, life revolved around hunting & she exceeds at keeping lizards, frogs, & squirrel at bay. June of this year, was able to get Spice out in the hunt field in VA. A great day with great friends. Getting to see the terriers be just that "earth dogs". |
